Polignano a mare

One of the best known seaside resorts on the Bari coast. Polignano a Mare is the city that gave birth to Domenico Modugno who, looking at his rocky promontory overlooking the sea, wrote the famous song "In the blue painted blue".

Beyond the Marchesale arch, the only gateway to the medieval village, there is a strong feeling of protection, almost like a hug. Not far from the entrance door of the ancient village there is the Matrix church, dedicated to the Madonna of the Assumption, remodeled several times over the centuries and mainly Renaissance. Another noteworthy building of worship is the church of S. Antonio which houses a Venetian wooden choir of the eighteenth century and some important pictorial works.

In the buildings of the former slaughterhouse, there is the only permanent museum of contemporary art in Puglia, the Pino Pascali museum, inside it is possible to observe some works by Pascali (Polignanese artist) and also temporary exhibitions are set up.

Beaches along the coast of Polignano a mare
There are numerous beaches along the coast of Polignano a Mare. 12 kilometers long, the coast alternates coves with pebbles to small beaches of fine sand, there are many beaches but there are also stretches of free beach. The characteristic of the Polignanese promenade is the presence of numerous caves dug by the erosive action of the sea, the most famous being the Palazzese cave currently home to a hotel restaurant; to visit with a boat trip also the other.

Lama Monachile
Lama Monachile, also called Cala Porto, is the symbol of Polignano beach and can be easily reached on foot from the historic center via the Monachile bridge. From Roman times, the bridge is on the route of what was once the Via Traiana. One of the most popular beaches is Cala Paura, just outside the town, it is divided into two small bays, one with services and the other free.

Ponte dei Lapilli is also very beautiful, a free beach accessible after a short walk along the rocks. Porto Cavallo and lido San Giovanni have sandy beaches ideal for families and are located in the hamlet of S. Vito. Cala Portalga is located just outside the town of Polignano, characterized by a small arch that gives access to the pebble beach; from here you can admire the Scoglio dell’Eremita.

Moving from Polignano a Mare towards Castellana Grotte, you will meet a series of fortified farms, the first of which is Masseria Lamafico.
